The Somali Youth & Family club supports refugee and immigrant families in King County by providing a number of free resources including afterschool tutoring and homework support.
Many of our students come from non-English speaking households so our program offers homework support that many of their families are unable to offer due to language barriers. Our program not only works with students on homework but through games and activities, helps students strengthen their math and reading skills. We also support our students' physical education with our weekly basketball pick up league.
Our afterschool tutoring center runs Mon-Weds from 6-8 pm. We are especially looking for volunteers who can commit to 2 hours at least one day per week consistently through the school year. We are also seeking flexible substitute tutors who can come on an as needed basis. Applications to be a tutor are accepted throughout the year. Training and support will be provided. The program is generally closed during school holidays.
Skills
- Tutoring: Patience and a positive, friendly attitude are a must. Group tutoring will focus on either Reading or Mathematics instruction at the elementary or lower middle-school levels.

Education is enrichment and we engage students with opportunities that inspire young people to become life long learners. We offer security to those who are facing homelessness or displacement from our talented Case Managers in Housing. SYFC Advocates by going out into our community and getting their needs met. We Engage Communities by frequently hosting events where we gather and collaborate to craft solutions to everyday problems.
