If you can read this, you can help share the gift of literacy with an adult learner!
Who will you help?Adults who would like to improve their basic reading and writing skills in order to achieve a variety of personal goals (e.g., apply for jobs, help their children or grandchildren with homework, write a letter or email, read financial and legal documents such as leases and bank statements).
What will you do?Tutors meet one-on-one with students twice per week to reach literacy-related goals using methods taught during a 12-hour tutor training series.
When will you meet? The DLC is open Monday-Thursday from 9am to 12pm and from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. The minimum commitment is a 90-minute lesson twice per week (3 hours total per week) . Lesson schedules are based on the availability of each tutor and student. We will work with your schedule.
Where will you meet? The DLC is located at 1905 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham, NC 27707. Our 2-story building is located across the street from the Lakewood Shopping Plaza and just down the street from the Lakewood YMCA. Free parking is available in our parking lot.
How long is the commitment? We ask all literacy tutors to make a 6-month commitment. Most tutors choose to continue beyond this initial commitment. If you are not sure that you will be able to tutor for at least 6 months, please let us know. We may be able to match you with an adult learner who is uncertain about his or her long-term schedule or find an alternative placement for you.
Come to an upcoming Volunteer Orientation to learn more about this opportunity!
Volunteer Orientations will be held from 6pm to 7pm on January 9, 10, and 12. You only need to attend one of these sessions. (Depending on the program and volunteer role you choose after attending the orientation, you may also need to complete a 12-hour tutor training, described below.)
To sign up for an orientation, please email us at email@example.com or sign up via facebook at one of our three orientation event pages: https://www.facebook.com/pg/durhamliteracycenter/events/
You can also email us at this address if you would like to volunteer but cannot make it to one of these sessions. We will help you decide which program is the best fit for you, give you any pre-training homework, and register you for any required training.
The location of all orientations is 1905 Chapel Hill Rd.
