If you would like to tutor an adult learner as they work to improve their literacy skills, then please email or call (919) 489-8383.

Who are you helping?
Adult students with a variety of goals: learning to read for the first time, improving their reading ability, helping their children/grandchildren with homework, understanding more about their jobs or preparing to take the GED.

What are you doing?
Working with a student twice per week to assist them in reaching their individualized goals. (Each lesson is 1.5 hours long.)

When do you meet?
Tutors can schedule their lessons in the morning (between 9am and 12pm) or in the evening (between 4:30pm and 8:30pm), Monday through Thursday.

Minimum commitment: 3 hours per week.

Required Training:
To work with adults who need basic literacy instruction, new tutors must complete a 12-hour training series. For the fall semester, these trainings will take place on:

  • Monday, August 22 (6-9pm)

  • Wednesday, August 24 (6-9pm)

  • Saturday, August 27 (9am-3pm)

We also highly recommend that prospective tutors attend a Volunteer Orientation session prior to the training so that they can learn more about all volunteer opportunities with our various programs. If you indicate that you are interested in this volunteer position, we will send you Volunteer Orientation dates as soon as we have set them. Many thanks for your interest!
