As a YES!Atlanta mentor, your goal, during your one year commitment, is to help your assigned youth do better in high school while reducing self-defeating and unproductive behavior. We call both mentor and youth "Committed Partners", acknowledging the trusting, mutually supportive nature of the relationship.
As a Committed Partner you will meet with your youth face to face once a week for at least an hour, doing things that you both enjoy, and communicate by phone or social media at other times.
This will make a huge difference in the teen’s future - and yours. Most YES!Atlanta Committed Partners (both adult and youth) have said that they have gotten far more out of their participation than they have given. Mentoring can change two lives! YES!Atlanta enrolls "at-risk" inner-city teens and supports them with long-term mentoring by trained adult mentors recruited from throughout our city. Our goal is to have participants graduate from high school, while reducing or eliminating self-defeating behavior that hinders their maturing into fulfilled, responsible and productive members of their community.
Description
YES!Atlanta's Rising Star Program was created in 1990. Targeting inner city teenagers, Rising Star is a year-long mentoring program that supports participants in fulfilling goals they set for themselves upon entering the program. We were named a "Point of Light" by President George H. W. Bush, in honor of the effectiveness of our work with teenagers. Since its creation Rising Star has worked with nearly 1,000 youngsters to open new possibilities in their lives and end their hopelessness about their future.
