The Horticulture department is responsible for maintaining the wonderful appearance of Maymont's gardens and grounds. Because of the extensive acreage, it is impossible to maintain it without the assistance of volunteer gardeners. Volunteer gardeners tend to all areas of Maymont under the assistance and supervision of the Horticulture staff. They also greet the public, provide them with information about Maymont's gardens and help them find their way throughout the estate. Volunteers are needed Monday thru Friday year round. Must be 18 years or older.

Maymont was the 100-acre Victorian country estate of Major James H. and Sallie May Dooley. The Dooleys completed their opulent mansion in 1893 and spent the next three decades creating the gardens, landscapes and outbuildings you see here today. Upon Mrs. Dooley's death in 1925, Maymont was bequeathed to the City of Richmond . Attractions for visitors added over the years include the Nature Center, Native Virginia Wildlife Exhibits, Children's Farm and Carriage Collection. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the private non-profit Maymont Foundation.
