Vigil Volunteers

Goal: "That no patient dies alone"

Reward: "To glimpse the divine."

Description: Vigil volunteers provide a calming presence for patients who are transitioning and imminently dying. Vigils bring peace and dignity to patients when they are dying alone or when families request additional support. It is our goal that all of our patients die looking into the eyes of love. Volunteers are expected to make a commitment to volunteer at least once a month for two hours.

Volunteers are provided free training, a training certificate, and can work flexible hours that suit their individual schedules. Volunteer training blends ancient wisdom with contemporary practices.

Volunteer Training is offered on a quarterly basis at the Bloomington office (see the schedule for 2014 Orientation and Training dates).

*Out of respect for the grieving process, if you are a surviving family member, we encourage you to wait a minimum of 13 months following the death of your loved one to serve as a direct care volunteer or in public relations activities.

Mission Statement

AseraCare's mission is to share our passion for improving quality of life through innovative healthcare, one person, one family and one community at a time.

Description

Hospice is about living. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death, but rather it affirms life, emphasizes dignity, and enhances the quality of the remainder of a person's life. Hospice adds life to days at a time when days can no longer be added to life.

Hospice treats the person, not the disease . . . focuses on family and friends, not just the individual . . . and emphasizes the quality of life, not the duration.

Hospice is a program of palliative and supportive services that provide physical, psychological, social and spiritual care for terminally ill persons and their families. It is a comprehensive, medically directed, team-oriented program that accentuates pain control and symptom management for patients who no longer respond to routine aggressive medical care. The focus of hospice care is palliative rather than curative in nature.
