About Health Protection & Education Services

Location:

6900 Delmar, St. Louis, MO 63130, US

Mission Statement

The mission of Health Protection and Education Services (HPES) is to: 1) detect and prevent diseases; 2) refer clients to appropriate entities when needed; 3) educate clients on health lifestyles; and 4) educate medical trainees in preventative medicine.

Description

HPES operates as a 501(c)(3 )Corporation, which provides free health screening services and health education to the underserved and uninsured that live in targeted service areas in the St. Louis Area, where there is a dearth of medical facilities and private physician offices.

HPES clients are impoverished and are unable to obtain basic health maintenance services through the traditional healthcare system. Participants in our health screenings are primarily African American, Chinese and Korean. In addition, 25% of HPES clients are non-English speaking or have limited English proficiency. Our target group, due to racial, language and cultural barriers, finds it difficult to navigate the healthcare system.

Volunteer doctors include pediatricians, internists, surgeons, an audiologist, surgeons, ophthalmologists and dentists. HPES collaborates with the Integrated Health Network-trained health coaches for some of the translation and language-appropriate health coaching. The Language Access Metro Project (LAMP) provides health coaching translation services. HPES collaborates with the Tzu Chi Foundation, which provide translation services in Chinese and Korean.
