The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
Are you thinking about a career in a medical field? Are you recently retired and like to meet new people? Or maybe you have a day off during the week? If so, we have a flexible, fun and meaningful volunteer opportunity.
One or two times a month you will be asked to drive a senior in the Como Park/Falcon Heights area to and from a doctor's appointment. This service is invaluable to the senior because they can no longer drive. Our seniors may be using a cane or walker. Volunteer Drivers contribute greatly to helping our seniors maintain independence and makes a trip to the doctor not an all day event. Most appointments are within 1-3 miles of the senior's home. Monthly commitment is 1-3 rides and 2-6 hours total. More driving opportunities are available if you would like to drive more frequently.
You are asked to stay with your senior for the duration of the appointment (average of one hour) so bring a good book to read or a simple project. Your smile and ride will be very welcomed by them after a visit to the doctor's office.
You are to use your own vehicle, to provide proof of insurance, and a valid license. Rides occur Monday-Friday during the day. Our current volunteer drivers find this a very rewarding volunteer opportunity and encourage others to join them. Training is provided.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students in medical fields to gain the perspective of the patient. Also a great volunteer opportunity for recently retired person that likes meeting new people.
