SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Counselors provide free and unbiased information about Medicare, Medicaid and prescription assistance to seniors and their caregivers/family members as a volunteer for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs in conjunction with the Area Agency on Aging, called the Alliance for Aging. Volunteers are trained by the Florida Dept of Elder Affairs via online training modules and then sit with a mentor once a week in person in order to learn how to answer questions about Medicare and resources for medical care in our community. Counseling is done over the telephone and/or face to face. Counselors are taught to use the medicare website planfinder tool to find Medicare Part D plans that cover people's drugs and let them know what the costs are. Counselors are also use other websites to find prescription assistance for clients. SHINE Counselors have to pass a Level 2 criminal background check and cannot have a license to sell insurance or any conflict of interest. The SHINE program is looking for those who are able to commit their time and talents for at least two years, 5 hours each week. Counselors can counsel from the Alliance for Aging in the Doral area or from one of our satelite sites (Baptist Hospital, North Beach Oceanfront Senior Center, Miami Beach Government Center, Homestead Senior Center, Key West Senior Center, and more). Counselors can also counsel from home once they complete the mentoring program.
