LVA/SC tutors are trained in Basic Reading and English as a Second Language to help foster personal growth of our learners enabling them to achieve broader personal goals. It is with this training that LVA/SC will be able to make a difference in the lives of the 21% of Sullivan County's population that are low level readers. Tutors are required to give 2-3 hours a week of thier time to the program.
You can volunteer a few hours a week to working in one of the bookstores;

MISSION STATEMENT Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County is a not-for-profit organization which provides a variety of free services to help people achieve personal goals through literacy. We consider it our mission to: foster and enhance family literacy through the efforts of a corps of LVA trained volunteer tutors to adults functioning at the lowest literacy levels to further proficiency in English as a Second Language for those who wish it, free of charge all in an effort to stay the rising tide of illiteracy and improve the quality of life in Sullivan County .

Literacy Volunteers of America is a non-profit organization which provides a variety of services to help people achieve personal goals though literacy. We believe that the ability to read is essential, not only for personal growth but also for individual freedom and the preservation of a democratic society. The ability to read is important for informed citizens and democracy cannot long endue without an informed citizenry. We believe that literacy becomes increasingly important to the individual and to society as our culture becomes more complex and dependent on technology. We believe that in such a culture literacy is basic to achievement of one's potential and to the survival of our nation.
