Dog walkers perform a crucial service to our canine residents. As a dog walker, you are responsible for properly leashing and handling any dog under your care; providing dogs with stimulation and exercise during their walk; and teaching and reinforcing good behavior in our dogs. Dog walkers receive initial training from HSMSC Trainer Lee Phelan, and can choose to receive further training which will allow them to walk our more challenging dogs. Volunteers are only allowed and expected to walk dogs that match their level of training.
Additionally, dog walking volunteers have the opportunity to become Group Leaders, a role in which they would act as an organizer and mentor for one shift of volunteers. Dog walkers receive specialized training in how to enter and exit kennels; how to put a leash on a dog; and how to interpret and respond to dog body language.
To become a dog walker volunteer, you MUST fill out a volunteer application at the link below:
https://form.jotform.com/81194451885162
And you must attend a new volunteer orientation. Sign up for orientation happens after you have submitted a volunteer application.

Mission Statement
To save the lives of animals that have been injured, abused, and neglected To prevent animal cruelty To enrich the human experience through animal companionship The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County is a nonprofit organization, funded entirely by donations from individuals and organizations.
Description
Since 1933, the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County has been providing shelter, food and medical care for thousands of injured, neglected and abused animals. And for just as long, people like you have kept us going. Thousands of animals are neglected or abused in Memphis and Shelby County each year. Hungry, scared and injured, these animals face a bleak future. That’s where we come in. We are the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County.
With support from animal lovers like you, we are able to help prevent and stop animal abuse as well as help injured animals in Memphis and Shelby County. We are able to provide animals with a safe place to recover, nutritious food and outstanding veterinary care. On average, we provide sanctuary to over 100 animals at our facility at any given time, with dozens more placed with foster families until they are ready to be adopted. And we are dedicated to giving these animals a brighter future.
An important part of our work is giving these animals the emotional support, training and socialization abilities that will allow them to be adopted into new and loving homes and long-lasting relationships.
We have been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty since our founding in 1933. From then until today, our funding comes exclusively from private donations from animal lovers like you.
