Orange Literacy offers one hour sessions every Tuesday night at the Inter-Faith Council's Project Homestart (women's shelter) and at the Community Center (men's shelter). Participants are offered free notebooks and pens not only as inducements to come to the workshop but in the hope that they will continue to write on their own to express their creativity.
One-hour sessions begin with introductions and a brief description of goals. Generally there are two ten-minute writing assignments, followed by a sharing of their stories. Often the participants offer encouraging comments or tell how a story affected them. The atmosphere is upbeat, and the creations are often humorous as well as self-revealing. The hour passes quickly, and those residents who join this group often help recruit for the next week.
