Crisis Call Center

Does helping others make you smile?

Can you put yourself in other people's shoes?

Are you the person your friends and family turn to when they need help?

If any of these sentences describe you, call us to volunteer!

The Crisis Call Center is looking for Crisis Hotline Volunteers! We offer training classes three to four times per year. No experience is needed. All you need to bring is compassion and understanding. All training and ongoing support are provided while you volunteer with us. Crisis Call Center’s extensive training will provide you with the tools you need to help people in crisis, sometimes at the worst moments of their lives.

As a volunteer, you will answer confidential crisis hotlines regarding multiple forms of crisis ranging from suicide to substance abuse to domestic violence. The 24/7 support that Crisis Call Center and its volunteers offers to our community helps over 60,000 individuals every year. Our amazing volunteers are who make that possible. They are truly the "heart" of what we do!

Teens ages 16-17 are also welcome to participate in our training to become Teen Texting Volunteers. Additionally, Crisis Call Center offers internship opportunities for students attending UNR or TMCC, and other institutions, including online educational institutions. The training is life changing, and answering the hotlines is a great experience for people working in or planning to work in any human services field.

Mission Statement

VISION: People in crisis will be able to find the support they need to become self sufficient. MISSION: To compassionately help people in crisis make healthy choices for a happier future.

Description

Crisis Call Center was created in 1966 as program in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno in response to the high rate of suicide in Nevada. One of the longest continuously-operating crisis call centers in the country, we are now an independent non-profit organization. Crisis Call Center plays an integral role in the community as the first point of contact for individuals in crisis; "the first call for help" providing intervention, education, and referral services. In many respects, Crisis Call Center is at the heart of the complex web of social and human services throughout Nevada.

Crisis Call Center provides 24-hour emergency telephone crisis intervention, support, information, and referral services throughout the state of Nevada. This service is provided free of charge for anyone in crisis, regardless of the nature of his or her problem, with the intention of offering callers the opportunity to discover learning and growth in their crisis. In addition to the 24-hour crisis lines, the Center also operates the Sexual Assault Support Services program, providing face-to-face crisis intervention and advocacy services for victims of sexual assault in Washoe County and neighboring rural communities.

Over the years, Crisis Call Center has developed a number of education and information programs for the purpose of preventing crises, particularly suicide, child and elder abuse, and sexual assault, as well as ongoing support groups for Survivors of Suicide Loss (SOSL) and adult and adolescent victims of sexual assault.
