Dakota City Heritage Village is a living history museum of 1900-era buildings located next to the Dakota County Fairgrounds in Farmington. Volunteers for the school programs get the chance to work with the public of all ages and teach them the history of Dakota County and a rural 1900 village. Volunteers also work in a fun environment, meet new people and make new friends through the Dakota City events and programs. This is an ongoing opportunity. We are looking for outgoing adults to dress in period costume and play the part of a One-Room Schoolteacher to elementary-aged children when they come to our village for a school field trip. Using our classroom guide, you will lead the class in 1900-era school lessons and recess for about 2 hours. You might also supervise their lunch and serve them an ice cream cone after lunch. Tour dates and times are set by the school, Mondays through Fridays sometime between 9am and 3pm. Spring tours run mid-April through June and fall tours run mid-September through October. Volunteer time is typically 2-1/2 hours per day, for as many days as you want to sign up. The only requirement for volunteering is a willingness to come to training and learn our program. No experience necessary but it is helpful if you like to "perform" and can speak in front of groups. Orientation, training and costumes are provided before you start.

About Dakota City Heritage Village

4008 220th Street W, Farmington, MN 55024, US

Mission Statement

Dakota City Heritage Village connects modern generations to the past rural life and agricultural heritage in Dakota County through living history interpretation, education, and the collection, preservation, and exhibition of information, objects and buildings.

Dakota City Heritage Village offers visitors the chance to experience rural life in 1900-era Dakota County. A recreated historic village and museum, Dakota City is located on the Dakota County Fairgrounds on the south edge of Farmington. Dakota City's five-acre site includes 23 buildings that help to tell the story of life in a 1900 rural town. Dakota City offers special events throughout the year where visitors will experience living history firsthand with costumed interpreters and demonstrations. The Village and Museum are also open for educational programs, senior groups, celebrations and tours by reservation.

As urban sprawl obliterates America's agricultural past, Dakota City connects families to the agricultural and immigrant past of Dakota County communities where they now live. Dakota City focuses on how rural communities functioned 100 years ago and how residents met their need for food, shelter, clothing and social interaction.

In Ahlberg Heritage Center, visitors can view permanent and temporary displays on Dakota County and Minnesota social and rural history, with an emphasis on agriculture. With more than 7,000 artifacts in the collection, Dakota City staff develops educational and engaging exhibits around its vast agricultural and material objects.
