Safe Harbor's Community Center is located in the lower level of our new Renewal Center in Downtown Hickory NC. Many people do not realize that Salvation closes its doors during the day and that leaves shelter residents without a safe place to go. The Community Center operates 9 to 3 pm, M-F and is open to women and women with children who need, just that a safe place where they have access to showers, a laundry area, toiletries and a warm meal with snacks during the day. We also have a Services Navigator on site to refer and connect ladies to all resources available to them through Safe Harbor and through out our community.

A Community Center Assistant & Driver acts in a supporting role to assist the Community Center staff with daily activities which include greeting and assisting guests with sign-in, basic needs, socialization, and driving. Driving is our most critical need. Transportation is one of the biggest barriers. The Community Center Assistant will provide transportation, using a Safe Harbor vehicle, to doctor, service referrals and counseling appointments, interviews, classes or group support sessions. These are just a few of the important transportation requests we receive.

Volunteers must be approved to drive by completing a Motor Vehicle Report through Safe Harbor's car insurance provider. Once approved, the volunteers name is added to our insurance policy as an approved driver of Safe Harbor vehicles. Full volunteer application and background check is required.
