ORGANIZATION: The Second Step

Purpose:
Childcare volunteers provide care to children (ranging from 2-12 y/o) in our residential program while their caregivers attend necessary programming and meetings. Childcare volunteers support the children they work with by engaging them in play and other fun activities. Childcare volunteers serve as positive role models who provide continuity for children at a time of great stress and instability in their lives.

Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise age appropriate activities while creating an atmosphere that is physically and emotionally safe for youth
- Encourage proper interaction and communication between youth
- Act as a positive role model to the youth and provide positive reinforcement
- Keep the playroom and childcare areas clean and organized

Reports to: Meghan Buckley, Child and Family Services Coordinator

Time Commitment: Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 6:45pm-8pm, with opportunities for additional hours
A one year commitment is preferred for this position

Qualifications:
- Enjoys and has experience working with children who have experienced family violence
- Ability to be patient, flexible and dependable
- Is non-judgmental and thoughtful about issues of homelessness and family violence
- Deep desire to work toward social justice for survivors and their families
- Consistent in attendance and communicates with supervisor

Support Provided: Childcare volunteers are required to complete a comprehensive training as they will be working directly with survivors and their children. The Child and Family Services Coordinator and Volunteer & Training Coordinator are available for questions and support. Additionally, Childcare volunteers are never providing childcare alone; a staff member is always present to provide support. Volunteers are also encouraged to attend the monthly volunteer peer supervision.

Mission Statement

The Second Step is a community of survivors, advocates, and volunteers who foster the safety, stability, and well-being of those who have experienced domestic violence. We provide comprehensive services, including safety planning, legal advocacy, counseling, peer support, transitional housing, and other essential services to adults, youth, and children in Greater Boston and MetroWest.

Description

The Second Step partners with survivors of domestic violence to address the aftermath of abuse. TSS programs include:
Residential: Two transitional residences, housing up to 58 survivors. Clients come to us from emergency shelters, and receive comprehensive services. Our Afterschool program provides survivors' children with academic and therapeutic support, and a chance to begin to heal.

Community: TSS provides services to over 300 adults & 500 children each year, including safety planning, case management, education, and mentoring.

Steps to Justice: Our attorneys provide legal services to DV survivors, including assistance with restraining orders, child custody and support, guardianship, immigration, benefits and housing.

Youth & Prevention: Focuses on outreach & education as part of a larger emphasis on violence prevention. We provide education about DV and dating violence. We also operate groups for teens who have been exposed to DV.
