We are gearing up once again for the return of the Western Burrowing Owls to Cesar Chavez Park in Berkeley. These owls arrive in the fall and leave in the spring. As they overwinter at the park, Golden Gate Audubon sends out trained docents to show park users the owls, and talk about the plight of this locally endangered bird.
Only once a year docents are trained in collaboration with the City of Berkeley Parks and Recreation Department and we hope to do the same in 2014. If you are looking for a new and rewarding experience in Burrowing Owl protection and outreach, this is the opportunity for you. Volunteers commit to volunteering 2 hours per month October through March.
Training for the 2018-2019 Burrowing Owl Docents will happen on Saturday, September 22,2018 from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m, in Berkeley. If you are interested, please RSVP to nweeden @goldengateaudubon.org.
Anyone interested in becoming a new docent for the 2018-2019 season, this training is mandatory and will cover the following information:
- History, rules and regulations of the Berkeley Marina and Cesar Chavez Park
- Burrowing Owl natural history and facts
- How to be a good docent
- Data Collection and monitoring
