Mission Statement

Fairchild Foundation is an all volunteer, non-profit grassroots Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) organization that helps spay and neuter stray and feral cats in Berks County and surrounding areas in PA to reduce the number of animals killed in our shelters simply because there are not enough homes. TNR allows the cats to live out their lives in nature where they already existed.

Description

Fairchild Foundation advocates for and practices Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Scientific studies show that TNR is the humane and effective approach for managing feral cats. Trap-Neuter-Return improves the lives of feral cats, improves their relationships with the humans who live near them, and decreases the size of colonies over time. Cats benefit from Trap-Neuter-Return in both the long term and the short term. Studies document that after neutering, cats become healthier and gain weight, and that the lifespan of cats in managed colonies increases. In addition, studies have found that aggressive interactions among cats in managed colonies decrease after spaying or neutering, while affectionate interactions increase. Cats in neutered colonies also roam less and do not fight over mates.

Caring for a feral cat colony has tremendous benefits to caregivers, neighbors, and the cats. Though cats have been living outdoors for over 10,000 years on their own, there are steps that YOU can take to promote their well-being, make them good neighbors, and assist the people who live nearby in understanding the cats.
