Amistad (Friendship, in Spanish) is a volunteer driver network which was set up through the Addison County Farm Worker Coalition. They provide much needed transportation for farm workers and their families living and working on our local dairy farms. Transportation is primarily for medical appointments to the Open Door Clinic and other medical facilities in the area, with occasional trips to go shopping, to the bank or to social functions. Volunteers are encouraged to provide a ride at least once per month, but level of commitment is determined by the volunteer. An ability to speak some Spanish is helpful, but not necessary. Hours are generally during week days or on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, when the Clinic is open. Volunteers are asked to provide a copy of their license, car registration and insurance. Generally an email is sent out to volunteers once per week with a listing of the general location of the workers needing rides and the destination. Whoever is able and willing to provide that ride will call or email back. Then the coordinator will follow up with a phone call to give specific names and addresses to the volunteer. Appointments at the Open Door Clinic are generally one half to one hour long, and the driver can do errands or wait at the clinic to take the worker back to the farm. For more information or if you would like to volunteer, please call 388-7044.

Mission Statement

RSVP is national volunteer management services which offer individuals age 55 and up the opportunity to share their experience, skills and time by volunteering for local non-profit organizations.

Description

RSVP recruits, places and supports its volunteers, providing them with meaningful opportunities to contribute to their community. Addison County's non-profits' needs are met in critical areas such as human service, health, state and local government, education, literacy and the arts. RSVP also oversees several signature programs that benefit local residents. These include free Bone Builders osteoporosis prevention classes; the Green Mountain Foster Grandparent Program, which places volunteers in our schools; the Warm Hearts Warm Hands Initiative which distributes handmade items to local schools, nursing homes, social service agencies and hospitals; and the RSVP Tax Program which provides free tax services to low income residents. These programs allow Addison County residents to stay healthy, financially stable, and successfully age in place.
