ORGANIZATION: Iowa International Center

Want to add a little international flavor to your staycation this summer? Welcome a visitor from Turkmenistan into your home for a short home stay!

The Iowa Council for International Understanding is hosting 10 visitors from Turkmenistan in conjunction with the Community Connections Program, sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Participants come to Des Moines for 22 days of professional development and networking, as well as for cultural exposure to America.

One of the most valuable aspects of this program is the home stay experience with local residents!

Who: Farmers, vets and government officials from Turkmenistan, Advanced Livestock Technology Program.
When: July 29th- August 16th (minimum of 3 nights, please).

Hosts may choose to have one or more of the 13 participants.

Duties include:
  • Hosting the visitor(s) overnight,
  • Helping to get them to and from the Quality Inn and Suites (by Wells Fargo Events Center) in the mornings and evenings.
  • Providing dinner and breakfast.

Several fun events will be planned with the group as a whole

Founded in 1938, the Iowa International Center began by welcoming and providing safety for refugees fleeing Germany and Poland. For over 75 years, we have provided personal and professional opportunities linking Iowans with peoples from around the world. The Iowa International Center also provides access to critical resources to Iowans, new Iowans (including refugees and immigrants), and international visitors in Iowa to help our state become a more inclusive and welcoming place to live, work and raise a family.

The Iowa International Center's key programs and activities include the following:

Multilingual Resources for New Iowans, Refugees and Immigrants - Welcometoiowa.org and a free 24/7 Statewide Emergency Interpretation Hotline.

Interpretation and Translation Services - professional interpretation and document translation.

The Sehgal Foundation International Visitors Center - we host more than 130 global leaders annually for professional exchanges and local hosting opportunities.
