Having Fun at Sunday Suppers

Sunday Suppers is looking for key volunteers to help carry out its mission of FOOD, FELLOWSHIP and FRIENDSHIP that has served the district's homeless and underserved for over 20 years. If you love sharing food, conversation and good times with new and old friends, Sunday Suppers may be the perfect activity for your next Sunday night.

Like many homeless outreach groups in DC, Sunday Suppers offers food and occasionally clothing and other items to the city's homeless and underserved populations. Unlike other homeless groups, however, Sunday Suppers sets up tables and chairs on the sidewalk, pushes Motown, Soul and R&B out big speakers and shares an hour and 15 minutes visiting with people at each site. As important as the food and clothing we provide are, they are secondary to the real heart of the program:

sharing friendship with the people we serve and other volunteers and establishing relationships that continue from week to week.

Each week a team of volunteers bands together to prepare the three main items on our menu: pasta/soup, sandwiches and hard-boiled eggs. As an individual volunteer, you would be assigned one task, complete with instructions and the chance to be reimbursed for the cost of ingredients. At 6pm, everyone meets at the corner of 4th and K Streets NW where we serve, eat and hang out until it's time to move to the next stop at 1300 10th Street NW.

Sunday Suppers volunteers come from all over the district and its suburbs. Some have just moved to town while others are long-time locals, but all come with at least one thing in common: the desire to reach out and engage a part of their community that would otherwise remain at a great distance. If this sounds like you, please get in touch. We'd love you to help us fight hunger in our city.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Sunday Suppers to share friendship with the people we serve and establish relationships that continue from week to week.

Description

Once a week, Sunday Suppers sets up tables and chairs on the sidewalk, pushes Motown, Soul and R&B out big speakers and shares an hour and 15 minutes visiting with people at two different sites. As important as the food and clothing we provide are, they are secondary to the real heart of the program, sharing friendship and establishing relationships.

Our 1 meal a week will not keep anyone alive, physically. Yet, some of the people we serve have told us that we are the best friends they have. Together with the people we serve, we create a culture of our own on streets that are normally hostile. It is a culture where people look each other in the eye, enjoy conversation and food and where hugging is normal behavior.
