COMPEER Chester County

Compeer friends at Marsh Creek State Park

Do you enjoy getting to know people and encouraging them? Give the gift of friendship to someone in the Phoenixville area who's working on their mental health recovery! Join Compeer.

All it takes is 4 hours a month. Spend time with your friend doing things you both enjoy - going out to lunch, seeing a movie, or just chatting. Your friendship can make a difference!

Volunteers receive training and can choose their friend. People are matched up based on mutual interests, compatibility, and location. Staff facilitate an introductory meeting and provide ongoing support. Occasional social events give friendship pairs a chance to get together with others in the program.

Volunteers must be age 18 or over and complete a background check.

About COMPEER Chester County

PO Box 5213, West Chester, PA 19380, US

Mission Statement

To connect adults who have mental health conditions with caring, trained volunteers, thereby maximizing community participation and helping people enjoy a friendship.

We match volunteers in friendships with men and women living with mental health conditions who can benefit from socializing and getting out in the community. Compeer Chester County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, volunteer-based program that is part of Mental Health Partnerships ( Each volunteer befriends one person of the same gender.

Sharing activities and conversation with a supportive friend has been shown to help a person with a mental health diagnosis feel more positive and hopeful -- and less isolated. Friendships build confidence and boost self-esteem, both vital for someone on their road toward recovery.

The word "compeer" means peer, equal, companion. Matched "compeers" decide together what activities to participate in during their time together each month.

Compeer is supported by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations.

Compeer's vision is that way people view persons with mental illness will be changed; persons in mental health recovery will feel more included in their communities, and their lives will be transformed by connecting them with a special friend.
