Support children's literacy in your community and inspire a love of books and reading. Work with elementary school staff to schedule students and volunteers and to provide program oversight during reading sessions. Lead a team of committed volunteers and make a significant contribution to your local school. Positions available in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties.
SMART is a book and reading program that builds literacy skills in PreK-third grade students by pairing them with community volunteers.
Programs run during school hours Monday - Friday. Time commitment is 2 - 10 hours per week, depending on elementary school assignment and your availability. Programs run from mid-August through mid-May.
Opportunities available include:
- Volunteer to run a SMART program two days or five to 10 hours a week.
- Coordinate with one other volunteer; one day or two to five hours a week.
- Volunteer as part of a small team of coordinators (hours per week determined by the team).
The SMART Site Coordinator is essential to ensuring that a SMART program is able to open at a school.
