SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is currently recruiting Site Coordinators for our programs in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties. As a SMART Site Coordinator, you will lead a team of committed volunteers and make a significant contribution to your local school. Work with elementary school staff to schedule students and volunteers and to provide program oversight during reading sessions. This leadership volunteer position is an indispensable piece for creating a successful SMART program.

SMART is an early literacy nonprofit that envisions an Oregon where all kids can realize their full potential through reading. We engage community volunteers to help PreK-third grade children become confident readers by providing one-on-one literacy support, valuable adult mentorship, and books to take home and keep.

Programs run during school hours Monday - Friday. Time commitment is 2 - 8 hours per week, depending on elementary school assignment and your availability. Programs run from mid-September through mid-May.

The SMART Site Coordinator is essential to ensuring that a SMART program is able to open at a school.

Mission Statement

SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest need schools with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: one-on-one reading time and access to books. We mobilize volunteers to read with PreK through third-grade children, building confidence, literacy skills and a love of reading. SMART Reading provides a meaningful way for Oregonians to make a direct impact in their communities.

Description

SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is a nationally recognized, community-funded nonprofit that partners with a statewide network of educators, volunteers and advocates to help Oregon's children become confident readers and productive citizens.

SMART engages a diverse set of community volunteers to provide program support as Site Coordinators, SMART Team Members, Program Aides, and Readers. SMART also offers opportunitites to those who wish to act as SMART Ambassadors or Chapter Members to heighten awareness and fundraising.

SMART partners with hundreds of schools statewide to deliver proven literacy support to K-3 children. Teachers recommend students for participation in the program, which complements the school's curriculum.

The program typically operates during the school year between October and May. Whether you can volunteer 1 hour a week, 1 hour a day, or once during the year. Your donation of time can help reverse the statistic that 38% of Oregon's 4th graders read below the basic level.
