LVA-GNH welcomes the participation of volunteers at all levels of the organization. Individuals wanting to become tutors must successfully complete the tutor training workshop. Tutors must have a high school diploma, and be able to read, write and speak English well enough to communicate clearly. Knowledge of a foreign language is not necessary. Our program affords tutors a challenging and rewarding opportunity to help adult students meet personal goals through the teaching of basic literacy and English speaking skills.

Mission Statement

Literacy Volunteers of America - Greater New Haven, Inc., is a non-profit educational organization that trains and certifies tutors to provide learner-centered instruction in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages. We provide free instructional services to willing adults functioning below the 6th grade level who want or need to improve their reading, writing, and oral communcation skills. Our goal is to increase the English language skills of these individuals so that they can participate more fully in the social, economic, and political life of the community.

Description

We are the local affiliate of a nation-wide non-profit founded in the early 1960's to help adults who need to learn to speak English as a second language. Since that time the organization has reached into every state with more than 350 affiliated offices nationwide, and 15 in Connecticut. The Greater New Haven Office has served the literacy needs of the region for more then 18 years.
