About

Are you a hard-working and passionate individual looking to make a difference?

Street Sense is seeking motivated volunteers to assist with daily paper sales. We are a non-profit offering economic opportunities to people experiencing homelessness by publishing a 16-page biweekly newspaper that elevates voices and encourages debate on poverty and injustice. Our newspaper vendors, persons currently or formerly homeless, sell the newspaper and keep 100% of the profit.

Paper sales volunteers are the backbone of our organization and have daily interaction with individuals experiencing homelessness. By volunteering, you will learn personal stories of homeless struggles, provide a necessary service for our vendors, and play a major role in supporting Street Sense's mission to end chronic homelessness in DC.

VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Distribute newspapers to vendors in 4-hour shifts either AM (9am-1pm) or PM (1pm-5pm) at least one shift per week

  • Alert paid-staff of any vendor needs or concerns

  • Prepare offices for vendor workshops and various meetings

  • Retrieve vendor mail, donations, and messages as requested

  • Assist Editorial staff with content-related tasks as needed

  • Assist Administrative staff with other office projects as needed

VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to communicate clearly in English

  • Basic understanding of computers, word processing and email

  • Must have basic math and cash handling skills

  • Should be able to navigate office environment which includes stairs

  • Should be able to lift and carry at least 20 pounds up and down at least one flight of stairs

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position works directly with our vendors, many of whom are people currently or formerly experiencing homelessness and/or poverty. Successful volunteers will need to be able to demonstrate patience and understanding when dealing with people of diverse backgrounds, educational levels, and mental health.
