We all remember someone who singled us out and gave us their time and attention. They helped us engage in something new or gain the motivation and confidence to succeed. Big Brothers Big Sisters is partnering with area school districts, businesses, Chambers of Commerce, United Way and other non-profit organizations to launch Career Navigators- a unique one-to-one mentoring program that at its core helps position the young adult for graduation and career success. This program allows a direct connection of the volunteer with the child's school and advisors to influence academic performance. It also allows the relationship to explore community resources and opportunities. The program is structured as an after school program, with the volunteer visiting the child twice a month from 3:30 to 5:30PM. The first meeting of the month involves a site visit to an higher education institution such as a community college, apprenticeship programs or technical school. The second meeting per month is an opportunity to visit a workplace or organization in the community- getting personal behind the scenes exposure to the people who make the organizaiton a success. The match also have the flexibility of meeting on weekends if they desire. Although the match is one-to-one, the match is part of a group of matches from that school so they get the opportunity to network and be part of a larger community initiative.
