Our two main opportunities for volunteers are leading the horse during a therapeutic riding lesson, and sidewalking next to the horse to assist the rider during the lesson. The leader does need to have horse experience and feel comfortable with the behaviors of a horse. The sidewalkers can have very little to no horse experience - training is provided! The leader's job during the lesson is the handling of the horse, and the sidewalker's job is to assist the rider.
Program volunteers may work with individuals with disabilities in our private student program, Public School Program, Interactive Vaulting Program, Veterans Program, or in Hippotherapy.
Lessons are scheduled Mon - Sat from 9 AM - 6 PM and take place at Brickhouse Equestrian Center on Johns Island.
