If you can read, then you're qualified to share your knowledge with another adult who may not be able to read road signs, newspapers or even medicine labels.

We'll show you how to use a guided step-by-step system that progresses at the learner's pace. In just a few hours, you'll have the tools and confidence that you need to get started. HCL will be there every step of the way, providing free support and all materials.

Tutors are paired with a student in their community. A time and location are chosen to match the pair's needs. We tutor all over Harnett County in locations convenient for you - churches, libraries, banks and Job Link Centers.

Home to a growing Hispanic population, Harnett County has constant demand for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutors and group teachers. While being bilingual is certainly an asset, it is not necessary that you speak the native language of your students. In most cases, learners are most grateful that you are teaching them your language since that is their purpose in coming to HCL. We are able to support the much larger ESOL program offered by the community college by meeting in harder to reach areas, tutoring students one-to-one and forming smaller classes of only 2-6 students.

Mission Statement

TSLW began in 1985 as a grassroots volunteer organization determined to wipe out adult illiteracy in this area. Now incorporated and established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, that original mission still drives our staff, members, volunteers, board and even our students at TSLW. Based on the philosophy of adult literacy pioneer, Dr. Frank Laubach, HCL believes in "each one teach one."
