The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on our students' ability to further their education. Our students are adults (18+) studying for their high school equivalency (GED or HiSET tests), working to improve their general literacy, or learning English as a Second Language (ESL) through Wake Tech's College & Career Readiness program.

Volunteer tutors work one-on-one or in small groups, online, under the guidance and supervision of volunteer coordinators. Topics include high school equivalency preparation, English language practice, basic literacy and math. Average commitment is 1 to 3 hours per week for a minimum of four months. Due to COVID-19, instruction is offered online only, to allow students, instructors, and tutors to engage safely with each other.

Mission Statement

Wake Adults Volunteering Educational Services (WAVES) is the volunteer program for Wake Tech's College & Career Readiness program. We offer volunteers the opportunity to help other adults, from all walks of life, to realize their educational goals and dreams.

Description

Wake Tech's College & Career Readiness Program offers adult education classes throughout Wake County to help adults improve reading, writing and math skills, earn a high school equivalency diploma (through the GED & HiSET tests), or learn English as a second language. Our classes also help underemployed/unemployed persons prepare for employment or further education, developmentally disabled persons achieve their potential, and families strengthen literacy skills and family bonds.
