Volunteer Opportunities with Community Hospices
Inpatient Unit Volunteer (Washington location only) -- Provide non-medical support services to patients and their families to include: companionship and emotional support, assist with feeding patients, fill water pitchers, assist ambulatory patients in walking and assist with answering phones and greeting visitors.
Homecare and Long-term Care Volunteer -- Provide non-medical support through companionship and friendly visits to patients and caregivers in their homes or in long-term care facilities. May consist of reading to patients, preparing light meals, helping families with limited shopping and errands and listening to a patient share thoughts.
Bereavement Volunteer -- Provide grief education and telephone follow-up for individuals and groups. Requires an additional 8-12 hours of training and supervision.
11TH Hour Volunteer -- Provide support and a caring presence to hospice patients dying alone by helping supplement the professional hospice team. Must complete the hospice training program and be an active volunteer for at least six months before serving as an 11th Hour Volunteer. Requires additional training.
Volunteer Opportunities at The Washington Home
Administrative Support -- Provide clerical assistance to include; answering the phone, filing, assisting with mailings, organizing medical supplies and assembling admission packets. An additional three-hour training session is required.
Special Events Coordinator -- Provide administrative help with mailings and event logisticsincluding hotel set up, food and beverages ordering, and on-site registration.
Planned Giving Legal Counsel -- Provide legal advice for the Planned Giving Program and host staff/volunteer training seminars.
Grant Writer/Researcher -- Research and identify single and multi-year grant sources, help maintain proposal timelines and prepare reports to foundations.
Mealtime Assistant -- Help residents with special needs at mealtimes. Additional training provided.
Friendly Visitor -- Visit an assigned resident weekly to help with letter writing and reading.
Nursing Unit Support -- Assist unit clerks with phones and clerical duties.
General Clerical Support -- Answer phones, assist with typing and filing and other assignments.
Four-legged Friends -- Bring a pet to visit residents.

Description
The Washington Home & Community Hospices, located in Northwest Washington, D.C. and Beltisville, MD, strives to ensure that every hospice patient receives the best in care and support. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles at Community Hospices: providing companionship to patients and their loved ones in home settings and assisted living facilities; supporting the organization in a variety of ways in clerical positions in both our Washington office and our Calverton office in Maryland, or working on projects with our Development Department. Volunteer visits, which range from weekly visits to drop in support, are scheduled according to the need of the patient and the availability of the volunteer. Please note, volunteers do not provide any medical assistance or personal care of any kind.
