ORGANIZATION: SKIP - Supporting Kids in Peru

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

SKIP is a charity working with children, young people and their families in the impoverished area of El Porvenir in Trujillo, Peru.

The teenagers range in age from 12 to 18 years and many have been involved in the SKIP programme since they were in primary school and have been able to engage in education as a result of SKIP's support. We are very proud that one young person from the programme will be studying to go to University this year (Peruvian students finish secondary education at 16 years and then take two years to prepare for entrance exams into University).

In 2009 we conducted a review of the secondary programme which led to restructuring the workshops that we offer in educational and recreational activities. In addition, we have developed an individual support planning process for young people who are struggling at school in order to help them plan for their future and make decisions about remaining in ongoing education or pursuing other training options.

We use activities and assessments to help the young people explore their goals, feelings and aspirations to help them make choices about what jobs they want to aim for and how they plan to get there.

We need innovative thinkers who will be able to use our limited resources to have maximum impact for the 120 young people enrolled on the programme.

This programme is fully supervised by a qualified social worker and we have a full training guide that also helps people to familiarise themselves with SKIP youth work. We have also developed a range of worksheets to help guide youth workers in structuring their sessions with the young people.

If you are interested in a number of positions, it is fine to combine two jobs - for example you can do English teaching and also work on the youth Project...or Economic development...etc We can discuss this further in the application process.

Mission Statement

SKIP is a non-profit organization helping disadvantaged children to realize their right to an education. We work to promote quality education for economically-disadvantaged children in El Porvenir and foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives. We work in partnership with families through holistic programs focusing on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family.

Description

Enrolling and retaining children in the education system is much more than a question of money. To ensure sustainable results, we address factors like family economy, emotional well-being, stability of home environment, nutrition, and academic skillset, all of which impact the chances of a child to enter and stay in school. Our holistic approach focusses on four pillars of family development:

Education
Economic development
Psychology
Social work
