Northern Santa Barbara County United Way Headline: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance VITA Location:
1660 B South BroadwaySanta Maria, CA 93454
( See a map)
URL: www.uwcentralcoast.org Description: This is a unique volunteer opportunity and no accounting experience needed.
Tax software guides you every step of the way. There is no liability to volunteers and training is provided at IRS-approved sites.
There will be a 3 hour orientation plus 24 hours of class time followed by a commitment of 8 Saturdays during the tax season. This is a serious time commitment but an extremely rewarding volunteer opportunity with knowledge gained that you can continue to use.
There will be two locations to chose from to serve after training...Santa Maria or Lompoc, CA.
Why Volunteer? Each year, millions of dollars are lost in North County when hard-working area families do not file for their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) at tax time. That money is lost to them -- and to the local economy. In addition, an estimated $2 million plus is unnecessarily lost when area families pay high fees to commercial tax preparation firms that offer Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs) or rapid returns.
The United Way wants you to join the team to help these families and your community's economy. Volunteer at one of the designated VITA sites (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) that provide low-income working families free tax preparation help and links to other financial opportunities. Sign up now. Training sessions start in early January 2010 so sign up now before December 21st 2009.
Spanish speaking volunteers are encouraged to sign up.
This opportunity is sponsored by: Northern Santa Barbara County United Way, Community Action Commission (CAC), Allan Hancock College, Cal Poly, 211, and the cities of Santa Maria and Lompoc.
Restrictions:You must complete:
-3 Hours of Orientation
-24 Hours of Classroom learning
-8 Saturdays beginning January 30, 2010 through April 3, 2010
