Position Description: Responsible for development, writing, integration, coordination and deployment of social-media and web-focused content across all platforms based on strategic initiatives and content efforts developed by the Marketing & Communications Director.

The Communications Writer produces content for a variety of marketing pieces, including but not limited to websites; print, digital and broadcast advertisements; brochures; and advertorials. The Communications Writer works with the marketing team to produce materials that build and maintain the SHIELD brand and support key recruitment and fundraising initiatives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with the Marketing & Communications Director to coordinate and integrate content developed for the web, print, marketing initiatives and public relations.
  • Write social-media style content and engage readers on all social media platforms, as needed, based on stories, blogs, videos and slideshows produced for web, print and mobile.
  • Manage youth participation in key campaign events, like rallies, assemblies, press conferences or legislative hearings as needed
  • Write web copy, as needed, for feature articles, blogs, press release, newsletter, as well as the organization’s messaging.
  • Fulfill additional writing assignments as needed for fundraising appeals, videos/slideshows, corporate messaging, feature articles and more.
  • Promote SHIELD and our programs
  • Edit video for promotional pieces and closed captions
  • Evaluate current video presence in media
  • Other office-related tasks/duties
  • MUST be available for the Awards Ceremony in late-April
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, journalism, marketing or a related field
  • An interest in and commitment to the programs, goals and objectives of the SHIELD Mentor Program
  • Exhibits energy and enthusiasm and an interest in working in the nonprofit sector
  • Discretion handling confidential information
  • Strong computer skills with PC knowledge (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and ability to use online platforms such as cloud storage (i.e. OneDrive)
  • Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize work and manage multiple priorities on deadline
  • Ability to learn quickly and assume responsibility in a small but active organization
  • Effective organizational and project management skills
  • Experience sourcing and managing content development and publishing
  • Initiative and ability to work with a variety of projects with minimal supervision
  • Maintains excellent writing and language skills
  • Punctual and dependable, able to adjust the schedule to meet business demands
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities with little supervision
  • Must have own transportation
