The Family Learning Institute provides free, individualized, one-on-one tutoring for low-income and academically struggling 2nd-5th graders in Washtenaw County. Our volunteer tutors work with the same student, on the same day, at the same time, once a week from October 2018 through the end of the school year (June 2019). Our 2018-19 program will begin in October and end in June, following the Ann Arbor Public School schedule. We will need tutors at Lakewood Elementary, Lawton Elementary as well as Parkridge Community Center and other Ypsilanti school locations. Absolutely no tutoring or teaching experience is necessary -- all materials, training, and support are provided by FLI. So, if you are able to tutor one hour between 4 and 6p any week day, Monday through Thursday, AND ESPECIALLY if you want to help a young student be a better reader, we would love to hear from you! Our programs are free for all of our students thanks to dedicated volunteers like you! We look forward to having you join our FLI community!

Mission Statement
The Family Learning Institute seeks to close the achievement gap in Washtenaw County. We believe that all students, regardless of life circumstance, deserve the chance to forge the skills they need to build the lives they dream.
Description
The Family Learning Institute (FLI) is a non-profit, volunteer-based educational organization that helps young people improve their reading, writing, math, and thinking skills. FLI works exclusively with low-income, academically underperforming 2nd-5th graders in Washtenaw county. Students are paired with one adult volunteer tutor for the entire school year, developing an educational and mentorship relationship; our professional teaching staff (Elementary Reading and Math Specialists) provide all the training and materials necessary to target our students' specific areas for growth. Each student in our program attends a two-hour session, once a week, half of which is spent working one-on-one with their tutor and the other half of which is spent working on writing or math application skills in small groups.
