ORGANIZATION: Science Club for Girls

  • 4 people are interested

We are looking for enthusiatic and passionate volunteers with a background or an interest in science, engineering, technology, media or math needed to lead small groups in our after-school girls science clubs. Our volunteers are undergraduate, graduate or professionals with a desire to merge the gender gap in science and technology. Come help our girls realize their potential to be whatever they want to be! The clubs are hands-on, exciting, and free to all the girls who participate. We provide training, support, supplies, and a flexible curriculum. Volunteers usually work in pairs with a group of 6-12 girls and 1 or 2 high school girl assistants. Science clubs at the Guilmette Elementary school meet on Thursdays from 2:45-5:15pm for 8-10 weeks. Volunteers typically work about 3 hours per week.

About Science Club for Girls

Location:

136 Magazine Street, Cambridge, MA 02139, US

Mission Statement

SCFG fosters excitement, confidence and literacy in STEM for girls, particularly from underrepresented communities, by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in science, technology, engineering & mathematics.

Description

Since its founding in 1994, Science Club for Girls (SCFG) has provided the very best in girls-specific programming by connecting girls in K-12 grades, especially those from underrepresented groups, with female mentor-scientists through free science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs in a fun, nurturing, interactive environment. Our club-based model fosters both scientific thinking and sisterhood for our youngest participants. Our teen leadership programs give girls the opportunity to be role models, teach young children science, learn life skills, conduct science research in applied settings, and explore careers in science and technology.

As of the 2014-15 program year, approximately 1,000 girls participate in SCFG programs in 17+ sites across four communities in eastern Massachusetts (Boston, Cambridge, Lawrence, and Newton). Sites are hosted by schools, community centers, the campuses of colleges and universities, and inside the corporate offices of our partner companies in STEM fields.
