With as little as 4 hours a week, a caring, experienced adult like you can make an impact...and stay healthy and active (and even get paid) in the process

Flexible volunteer options throughout North and East Oakland

Working with students in grades K-3 with a focus on literacy tutoring

Comprehensive training & team meetings to connect with peers, build confidence, and share ideas

Serve from 4 to 15 hours/week, depending on your schedule

(10 or more hours/week qualifies for a paid stipend)

Mission Statement

Experience Corps Bay Area (ECBA) engages older adults (50+) as tutors and mentors in order to increase literacy skills of children in grades K-3.

Description

Now in 20 cities, Experience Corps works to solve the serious social problem of illiteracy. Today, more than 2,000 Corps volunteers serve as tutors and mentors in urban public schools, teaching children to read and develop the confidence to succeed in school and in life. Research shows that Experience Corps boosts student academic performance, helps schools become more successful, strengthens ties between schools and surrounding neighborhoods, and enhances the well-being of the volunteers in the process.

  • Flexible Monday through Friday volunteer shifts
  • Complete training provided

A winning volunteer experience is based on realistic expectations. What we need from you:

  • Highschool Graduate/GED required
  • Conversational English required
  • Commit as little as 4 hours/week
