Jump Start is a one-to-one tutoring and mentoring program for incarcerated youth residing in the Illinois Youth Centers. The youths range is age from 13 to 21 and almost all are behind in reading and/or math. Most volunteers work with one youth at a time for approximately one hour per week, thought some volunteers may choose to do more.
No teaching experience is required and training and resources are provided. All tutoring is done in a supervised setting.
Volunteers are required to show proof of COVID vaccination. Mandatory testing is performed weekly. Masking is required at all times. Temperatures are taken upon entry to the facility.
Tutoring hours fall between 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday - Friday. For more details contact Melissa Auer at mauer@lvillinois.org.
