Serving Littles in the community since 1956, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, MD, Inc. (BBBS) is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the oldest and largest mentoring organization in the country. The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, MD, Inc. is to help children and youth (Littles) reach their full potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with mentors (Bigs).

As a Big, you are simply a friend to the Little with whom you're matched, not a substitute parent. You are there to be a source of support and guidance for your Little and to let him/her know you care. It's really as simple as that!

Big Brothers Big Sisters offers Community-Based, Sports Buddies and Site-Based Mentoring. You may serve as a Big yourself or, if married, serve as a Big Couple with your spouse.

In Community-Based Mentoring, Bigs and Littles spend time together each week and enjoy many activities in the community. Activities could include walks in the park, backyard barbecues, mountain hikes, and playing video or board games together.

In Sports Buddies Mentoring, Bigs and Littles spend time together each month attending or participating in a sporting event or physical fitness activity. Sports and physical fitness teach life skills, goal setting, character, and sportsmanship.

In Site-Based Mentoring, Bigs visit with their Littles at a participating school each week, during the school year. You and your Little could: read a book, do homework or a project, go to the school library or computer lab, play cards or board games, make an art project or craft, share jokes and funny stories, and talk about yourselves and your families.

The purpose of offering three different mentoring programs is to provide multiple options for potential Bigs and Littles. With many years of experience, BBBS has determined that Bigs and Littles have individualized needs and time availability.

The gift of yourself, along with the support of professional staff and the support of the Little's family, makes a big difference in the Little's life. During these formative years is when a Little needs you the most, so they know they are not alone, that someone really cares and they are important. You can change the direction of a Little's life for the better. It can change your life for the better too! Your friendship with a Little, plus the knowledge that you have made a positive impact on your Little's life, will be a source of deep satisfaction.

Serving as a Big is fun, rewarding and truly makes a difference in the lives of the Littles served.
