Hotline Counselor: MTO's Tenant Rights Hotline receives 10,000 calls annually from people seeking information about their rights as renters. The Hotline is staffed by trained volunteers versed in tenant-landlord issues, able to provide clarification on the law, and make referrals when needed. The role of the Volunteer Hotline Counselor is to educate and empower tenants to exercise their legal rights as well as to assist the Hotline Coordinator in training and recruiting new Hotline Volunteers. We provide the training, and staff is always available to back you up. Hours/Days can be flexible.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Listen to tenants issues
  • Assist callers in developing a strategy to solve their problem
  • Refer tenants to appropriate agencies
  • Maintain knowledge of current RLTO and other tenant housing laws
  • Send out written and online materials to callers
  • Assist in Training Hotline Counselors
  • Assist in keeping up to date records on Volunteer Hours and Contact Information
  • Check the Voicemail and return calls to callers
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Ability to clearly communicate information orally and written in English
  • Ability to learn and become familiar with Chicago’s residential tenant laws
  • Bilingual(English/Spanish) a plus
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent customer service skills
