Did you know that nearly 25% of adults in Cleveland don’t have a high school credential or GED? Without this foundation, it’s practically impossible for an adult to rise out of poverty.
Seeds of Literacy is working to empower adults through education, and you can help by volunteering your talents with our Community Relations Committee.
As a nonprofit organization providing free GED preparation and basic education to adults in Cuyahoga County, a strong and active Community Relations Committee is crucial to our success. Raising awareness about Seeds of Literacy in our community means that we can reach new tutors, new donors, and new students who need our services to improve their lives.
We’re seeking enthusiastic and resourceful individuals who can increase our presence in the community by helping us cultivate relationships with local media, place news stories, schedule presentations with community groups (e.g. churches, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club), and publicize events. Other ongoing projects include finding new ways to recruit tutors and students, and obtaining coverage through newspapers, radio, TV, social media, and grassroots marketing.
Interested volunteers should have experience in public relations or marketing/communications. The willingness to reach out to your community on behalf of Seeds of Literacy and be an engaged, vocal representative is key.
If you’re ready to help spread the word about our program and take a stand against illiteracy, please contact Sharon Farrer at 216.661.7950 or at sharonfarrer@seedsofliteracy.org .

Description
Seeds of Literacy brings together people of diverse backgrounds in order to help break a root cause of poverty: illiteracy.
Since 1997, Seeds of Literacy has provided free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and GED preparation to adults in Cuyahoga County. A unique curriculum designed and developed by Seeds of Literacy and one-to-one tutoring optimize learning by building relationships of trust between the student and the tutor. Since this approach allows each student to work at her or his own pace and academic level while receiving personal attention and encouragement, students of all academic levels may be able to participate in the program.
Seeds has student retention and graduation rates that are twice the national average, is the only adult literacy program in the county to be nationally accredited by ProLiteracy, and is a 501(c)3 organization.
