Direct Volunteers serve both patients and families in this nursing facility. Typically, volunteers visit once a week or more, at the volunteer's discretion. Activities might include (for various levels of the dementia) socializing with the patient and/or family, listening to a life review with the patient, reading to or writing for the patient; playing games; running errands; listening to music; doing small household tasks, playing a musical instrument, giving a hand massage, helping them to do some "creative" watercoloring or simply sitting quietly as a presence, one of the hardest but most important thing a volunteer can do with patients who may not always be responsive.
Training classes are offered to provide help in making every visit a good one.
