Start The Adventure In Reading (STAIR) is recruiting tutors for the 2019-2010 school year. Volunteers are needed to tutor second grade public school children one-on-one in reading. A professionally designed curriculum is used to tutor students from at 12 sites in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Tammany Parishes. Tutoring takes place after school (2 afternoons per week) or Saturday mornings. You can tutor 1 or 2 days a week.

About STAIR - Start the Adventure in Reading
Location:
1545 State St., New Orleans, LA 70118, US
Mission Statement
-- To increase the reading level of "skill deficient" students who participate in the program -- To increase each participant's sense of self-worth and esteem by providing a program which expands each student's knowledge of self and the greater world of reading -- To provide a caring environment which will promote a greater and more meaningful dialogue among multi-ethnic volunteers, students, teachers and parents
Description
STAIR is a reading tutoring program for at-risk public school second graders reading below grade level who are referred to us by their teachers. STAIR volunteers, after going through an initial training class, tutor the students -- one tutor for each student -- once a week, either after school or on Saturday morning.
Second grade is a critical stage in reading development. If a student is not reading by the end of first grade, then intervention at the second grade level is crucial.
