ORGANIZATION: Amedisys Hospice Roanoke

An Amedisys Hospice Volunteer is a special part of the Hospice team. They are people that wish to make a difference in the lives of the terminally ill or those who are grieving by giving their time to assist a patient, family member, or the office staff.

There two types of volunteer opportunities available:

  • Direct Care Volunteers - these are volunteers, ages 16 and older, who provide direct support to a patient or a family member through activities such as sitting with a patient to provide relief to a caregiver, running errands for a patient or family member, being a griend to the patient or a caregiver, helping those who are grieving, praying with a patient, reading, singing, or offering other services to assist with emotional or spiritual support.
  • Clerical/Administrative Volunteers - These are volunteers, ages 12 and older, who assist in the office and provide support through clerical activities.

* No specific hourly requirement. Must pass criminal background check if patient interaction. Must complete volunteer training.

Description

Hospice provides support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease so they may live as fully and as comfortable as possible. Hospice recognizes dying as a part of the normal process of living and focuses on maintaining the quality of remaining life. Hospice affirms life, and neither hastens nor postpones death. Hospice focuses on caring, not curing and in most cases care is provided in the patients home, which enables families to stay together in peace, comfort and dignity.
