Teen Science Cafe Speakers volunteer for an event that we host for our community partners for up to 30 teens. The purpose of the event is to provide opportunities for teens to learn about STEM and STEM related careers by meeting and interacting with the STEM community. The event last between an hour and a hour and a half. The format for the event for the speaker to spend about 15 minutes talking about their journey to become a STEM professionals, 15 minutes talking about their work in their current role and 30-45 minutes with either a hands on activities or demonstration with items that allow the students to understand your field. The rest of the time is for Q & A and networking with the students. The speakers must work in a real world application of the STEM.

The Teen Science Cafe, a program of our Math and Science Career Academy, is an opportunity for Teens (youth 13-18) to explore STEM Careers in an informal setting by having an opportunity to talk to a STEM professionals to learn about STEM Careers. The cafes will take places at the sites of our community partners in the City of Atlanta and South Fulton. The format of the Teen Science café is 4 parts:
  • Brief Introduction of Who you are, your organization and your current role
  • Sharing Your Journey to Becoming a STEM professional- things that you got you interested in your career path, activities that you did during your childhood and during college and/or graduate school to prepare you for your career
  • Introducing Your Students to Your Career and Your Work - Share with the students in more details, your career journey to what you do know and what you do in your current role
  • Demonstration or Hands on STEM activity that Introduces the Teens to Your Field - whether it is videos, a demonstration or a hands on activity to teach the kids
  • Q & A period

The event takes place at the city of our community partner during a weekday evening, we follow the Covid-19 protocols of the site.

Description

Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc. (SEM Link), is a tax-exempt national nonprofit organization that was founded in 2005 by Tokiwa T. Smith in Atlanta, Georgia on the premise that exposure to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) community is critical to K-12 students pursuing STEM careers. Hence, the organization being named SEM Link, because the essence of our work is connecting youth to the STEM community for youth to provide them with positive adult role models in STEM. Our programs and events increase students’ awareness of STEM Careers and encourage their participation in STEM Research through digital learning and hands-on activities.
Since the organization’s inception over 500 STEM professionals have exposed over 10,000 youth to over 50 different STEM career paths as well as supported hundreds of young STEM researchers. SEM Link currently offers programs in the Atlanta and DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia) metropolitan areas.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 21
  • The speaker is required to attend the event for 2 hours which includes time to set up prior to the start of cafe, the cafe which is an hour and time after the cafe to talk to students and clean up.
  • Each speakers has to prepare their own presentation included their hands on activities or demonstration and will also be required to submit information about their presentation prior to the cafe for evaluation surveys.
