Tutors assist struggling K-5th grade students in their elementary schools during school hours. Volunteer tutors commit to working with the same students approximately 30 minutes to one hour once a week. Sudents are chosen by the school and assigned to the tutors. Reading and math skillls are emphasized. Tutor training and workshops are provided for the volunteers. Tutors who are bilingual are always helpful, but not necessary. Volunteers choose the day and time they are available to tutor. We usually find a school close to their home or work that has "at risk" students.

Mission Statement

The mission of the San Antonio Jewish Coalition for Literacy is to provide "at risk" students with one-on-one tutoring once a week. Tutors are of all races and religious faiths. Our immediate goal is to have consistent, caring volunteers who will serve not only as teachers but also as friends and role models for the students. As mentors, the tutors encourage students to live up to their potential and set goals for themselves. Our visionary goal is that the students who are helped will be more likely to finish high school, get a complete education, and become more productive citizens. Another mission of the San Antonio Coalition for Literacy is to provide classes in English as a Second Language for adults whose native language is not English. The classes will include, but are not limited to parents of students in the literacy program. Students learn basic English grammar, conversation, and preparation for citizenship. The long-term goals for the adult students are that they become more proficient in English, more productive citizens in our community, and obtain better jobs.

Description
