Our Emergency Food Helpline is the first line of defense against hunger. Our trained operators connect people in immediate need of food to one of our nearby network pantries or soup kitchens, where they’ll be able to get a bag of groceries or perhaps a hot meal. One in six Alameda County residents depends on the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
The Emergency Food Helpline or Helpline is a referral program that helps families and individuals in Alameda County locate emergency food resources in their neighborhood - near where they live, work, shop, or go to school.
Training: Minimum commitment of twice a week for one month.
Best for: Individuals, especially volunteers who are bilingual, have basic computer, customer service and telephone skills.
Shifts: Weekdays, 9:00 am-noon, 12:00-3:00 pm, or 1:00-4:00 pm. Because of the training involved, a minimum commitment of four months is required.
Responsibilities: Answer telephone requests for food and make appropriate referrals for food programs in Alameda County. Make follow-up calls to clients. Use FileMaker Pro database program to track referrals.
Desired Qualifications: Pleasant phone manner and the ability to relate to diverse individuals and agency representatives. Must be available to work weekdays, at least one three-hour shift per week; shifts are 9:00 am-noon, 12:00-3:00 pm, or 1:00-4:00 pm. Computer and customer service experience is strongly recommended.
