Volunteer Support For Young Mothers In Peru

Join us in Cusco and support women and their children by offering volunteer support for young mothers in Peru. This small NGO provides a home, support and opportunities for the mothers so that they can feel safe, socialise with other girls and receive education to help prepare them for a life independent of the project in the long term. There are growing numbers of girls aged 10 - 17 becoming pregnant in Peru. Abortion is illegal and there is a lack of sex education for young people. Cases of abuse have also become more common (or known about).

The project is run by 4 adults as well as a social worker, a psychologist and a couple of managers and supports 10 young mothers and their babies. The girls often have no financial or emotional support from their families and the project is striving to create a family environment so that they and their babies can develop and grow. As well as providing basic lessons, teaching the girls about nutrition, hygiene, how to care for their babies, and general household skills the project also wants to develop the business and baking skills of the women so that they can potentially earn an income in the future. Come and support the growth and impact of this project on vulnerable women and their children.

Healthy Kitchens Volunteering in Peru

Join us in supporting local families by addressing hygiene and sanitation issues by working on our healthy kitchens volunteering in Peru project. Often kitchens in lower income communities are dirty, do not have clean water, ways to keep food refrigerated or storage options. They also contain smoky cookers which lead to very dirty surfaces and walls where bacteria and germs gather. This project has three elements; firstly cleaning the kitchens, secondly providing a ceramic water filter, building a cleaner burning stove, installing ecological refrigerators and installing cupboards for food storage, and thirdly educating families about hygiene and sanitation good practice. These elements aim to improve the lives of family by tackling the current problem and providing solutions.

The project is run by a local NGO in Cusco and its staff know the communities, located about 30 - 40 minutes outside of the city, really well. The NGO utilises project donations and an amount generated through accepting volunteers onto its programme to secure the items needed to enable this project to continue each year. Come to Peru and help the NGO to improve the day to day lives of families in Cusco as well as gaining an insight into the solutions to improving hygiene in the home being implemented in poorer communities.

Mission Statement

Kaya's mission is to promote sustainable social, environmental and economic development, empower communities and cultivate educated, compassionate global citizens through responsible travel.

Description

Responsible travel is about seeing the world in a manner that most respects and benefits local people, culture and the environment - it's travel in the real world, not tourism.

Every year thousands of people travel the globe looking to explore new environment and experience different cultures, with a spirit of adventure and a desire to learn more about the world.

As global travel becomes more accessible, and we look to visit further and more exotic locations, we often discover that the real world is not always easy to uncover, and often visitors don't get a chance to see beyond the window that tourism can offer.

As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to become a real part of the environments, lives and communities of the world's developing nations. And whether you chose to work on projects that benefit the wildlife, the environment or the people, you come away knowing that your being there has positively impacted those you have visited.

At Kaya, we pride ourselves on delivering only what is best for our volunteers and best for the communities which we are working with. You will find many volunteer organizations to chose between today, and many of these are also offering great placements around the world. But we believe that no-one works closer with their volunteers and with the receiving communities on the ground to make sure everyone can achieve the greatest benefits that volunteering has to offer.

For those of you who have skills that can benefit the projects, and even if you are looking to develop your professional skills in a developing country, your help is invaluable and Kaya staff will work with you to ensure your role matches your skill.

Internships, group ventures and specialist projects can be arranged by request.
