You're in pain but you don't go to the doctor because you cannot read the forms. This is the reality for one in eight adults in our community who struggle with reading and writing. You can make a lasting change in an adult's life and the life of his or her family by becoming a Washtenaw Literacy one-on-one tutor.
No teaching experience is needed. We offer a comprehensive, 15 hour long training and match you with an adult who needs your help at a time and place that's convenient to both of you. Every week for two hours, you meet together in a public place to work on reading or writing skills.
We ask that you make a 12 month commitment. It takes a lot of courage to ask for reading help. It also takes time to build a relationship of trust between you and the learner so that progress happens.
