The Literacy Center is currently accepting applications for their Board of Directors.

Individual Board Member's Responsibilities The Literacy Center Make a serious, long-term commitment to the cause of literacy. Understand The Literacy Center's mission, purposes, goals, policies, programs, services, strengths, and needs. Attend Board meetings regularly and prepare and participate in the policy-making decisions of the Board. To remain in good standing, board members must attend a majority of the bi-monthly board meetings and assigned committee meetings. Bring good will and a sense of humor to the board's deliberations. Participate actively on one or more of the Board's committees suited to your interests and skills and provide assistance on an individual basis to The Literacy Center's staff in areas of personal expertise. Ask timely and suitable questions at board and committee meetings consistent with your conscience and convictions, while supporting the majority decision on issues decided by the board. Suggest agenda items periodically for board and committee meetings to ensure that significant, policy-related matters are addressed. Speak for the board or The Literacy Center only when authorized to do so. Avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest that might embarrass The Literacy Center board, and disclose any possible conflicts to the board in a timely fashion. Serve in leadership positions and undertake special assignments willingly and enthusiastically. Exercise prudence with the board in the control and transfer of funds. Faithfully read and understand The Literacy Center's financial statements and help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibility. Take financial responsibility for the organization, making a personal financial contribution according to personal means. Assist the fundraising committee by implementing fund-raising strategies through personal influence with others (corporations, individuals, foundations). Foster The Literacy Center's approach to solving the problem of illiteracy in other spheres of influence where you have leadership responsibilities. Suggest possible nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and The Literacy Center's progress. Follow trends in literacy and report new developments to the board.

Mission Statement

The Literacy Center is dedicated to improving adult literacy and education thereby strengthening our community.

Description

We match volunteer tutors with adults who want to learn to read, or who want to read better.

Our reading students must be 18 or older. Anyone reading under an 8th grade level is eligible for our program.

Students work one-to-one with their personal reading tutor. Usually, they will meet at libraries, churches, or at The Literacy Center (on 1st Avenue by in the Ivy Tech Plaza)

We also offer High School Equivalency Testing Preparation Classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm.
