Horse Leader and Sidewalkers

Volunteers make therapeutic horseback riding lessons possible for children and adults with disabilities at Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding (CATR)! With your help, we provide our participants with the opportunity to make an enduring connection with horses. Volunteers in our therapeutic riding program typically volunteer once a week for 12 weeks, or sub in when able if their schedule does not allow a regular volunteer spot for the full 12 weeks. A horse leader is directly responsible for the horse and must have significant past horse experience. They groom and lead the horse during lessons depending on the needs of a participant. The horse leader must be aware of the horse, their body language, the surroundings, the instructor, and any activities in and around the arena or on the trail. They will be responsible for handling the horse throughout a one hour lesson. Horse leaders have the unique opportunity to work directly with horses to positively impact the lives of individuals with disabilities. All must participate in a Volunteer Orientation and Sidewalker Training at CATR before they begin volunteering. Our next trainings are Saturday, January 28th from 9:00 - 12:00 and Thursday, February 2nd from 4:00 - 7:00. Horse leaders must participate in an additional Horse Leader Training. Please contact Kenna Brookshire at volunteers@catr-program.org to register.
