Mission Statement

Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Seeking to put God’s love into action, Charleston Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. By facilitating homeownership, families can break the cycle of poverty, which goes a long way to building a better future for multiple generations.

Description

Founded in 1989, Charleston Habitat for Humanity focuses on a population not served by others in the affordable housing arena - the low to moderate income family living in tough conditions, with high rent, higher aspirations and the inability to obtain a conventional mortgage. We are dedicated to eliminating substandard housing through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to families in need.

To date, the affiliate has built 83 new homes, renovated 16 houses and supported 45 homes in Honduras - improving over 600 lives through home ownership. More than 3,000 volunteers donate between 10-15K hours every year to help us build and repair homes, lessening the cost of construction by approximately 50%.

Charleston Habitat for Humanity partners with the community to provide families in need with a safe environment, tools for success and an improved quality of life. Volunteers are the heart and legacy of our organization. We are an integrator of services that meets the unique needs of our families by providing a package of services including mortgage lender, home builder, social support provider, recruiting and training center, and retailer.

Charleston Habitat for Humanity strives to bridge the gap between burdensome rental costs and unaffordable bank mortgages by giving qualified families the option of purchasing affordable nonprofit homes.
